Engage Stakeholders
PMBOK note: This was a standalone principle in PMBOK 7 — “Effectively Engage with Stakeholders.” In PMBOK 8 it was consolidated into Build an Empowered Culture and Be an Accountable Leader. The concept is fully tested; the label changed.
Definition
Proactively engaging stakeholders means involving all individuals, groups, and organizations who can affect or be affected by the project — from identification through project close. Effective engagement goes beyond communication: it requires understanding stakeholder interests, motivations, and concerns, and adapting the engagement approach to each stakeholder’s context and needs.
